Steamie Terms and Conditions
Effective: 26 October 2026
Steamie is a product of Boolean and Bean Pty Ltd, a company based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ("we", "us", "our"). These terms cover your use of the Steamie app for macOS, Steamie Pro, and the steamie.app website (together, "Steamie").
By downloading, installing or using Steamie, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use Steamie.
1. What Steamie does
Steamie is a menu bar app for macOS. It shows what is using power, heat, memory and disk space on your Mac, and lets you act on it. Depending on what you choose, Steamie can:
- Calm an app: lower its priority so it uses less power. Calming is undone when you restore the app or quit Steamie.
- Stop an app, server or other process, or shut down a simulator. Anything unsaved in it may be lost.
- Clear caches and other files you select by moving them to the Trash, where you can put them back until you empty it.
- Delete unavailable simulators. This is permanent and can't be undone from the Trash.
- Apply rules you set up, which calm or stop apps automatically.
Steamie asks before it stops, shuts down or clears anything, unless you've set up a rule to do it automatically. You are responsible for the actions you confirm and the rules you create. Before you stop something or clear files, make sure you've saved your work and that you don't need what you're removing.
2. Your licence to use Steamie
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Steamie on Macs you own or control, in line with these terms.
You may not:
- copy, modify, sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute Steamie, except as allowed by law;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble Steamie, except where the law says you can despite this restriction;
- remove, bypass or interfere with licence checks, the trial or Pro features;
- share, publish or resell license keys; or
- use Steamie for anything unlawful, or to interfere with computers you're not authorised to manage.
Steamie is licensed, not sold. We, and our licensors, keep all rights, title and interest in it, including its name, mascot, icon and design.
3. Free use, trial and Steamie Pro
Free features. Some of Steamie is free to use without a licence.
Trial. Each Mac gets a free 14-day trial of Steamie Pro. Once the trial ends, Pro features stay locked until you buy a licence. Free features keep working.
Steamie Pro. Steamie Pro is a one-time purchase, currently US$19 (prices may change, and the price shown at checkout applies). A licence covers the number of Macs stated at purchase. You can free up a Mac in Steamie's settings and activate the licence on another one.
Licence checks. Steamie checks your licence with our payment provider about once a week. If it can't reach them for more than 30 days, Pro features pause until it can check again. Your licence isn't lost while they're paused.
Payments. Purchases are processed by Polar Software Inc. ("Polar"), our reseller and merchant of record. Polar handles payment, invoicing and sales tax, and its own terms and privacy policy apply to the checkout. We never see or store your card details.
4. Refunds and the Australian Consumer Law
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
As well as those rights, if you're not happy with Steamie Pro, email us within 7 days of buying it and we'll refund you. Refunds are paid through Polar, and your licence key is deactivated.
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law, or under any other consumer protection law that applies to you and can't be excluded.
5. Updates
Steamie can check for and install updates. Updates may add, change or remove features. We'll try not to remove a Pro feature you paid for, but we can't promise every feature will stay the same forever, or that Steamie will keep working with future versions of macOS.
6. Your data and privacy
Steamie does its measuring on your Mac. The information it reads and records stays on your Mac: power, temperature, battery history, running apps and processes, open ports and folder sizes. Steamie doesn't send it to us.
Steamie contacts the internet only to:
- check and activate your licence with Polar, which receives your licence key and a label for your Mac; and
- check for updates, which sends a standard request to our update server, including your app version and macOS version.
More detail is in our Privacy Policy at steamie.app/privacy.
7. macOS permissions
Some features need macOS permissions, such as notifications or access to certain folders. You can grant or remove them at any time in System Settings. If you don't grant a permission, the features that need it may not work.
8. No warranty
To the extent permitted by law, and subject to section 4, Steamie is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise that:
- Steamie will be uninterrupted or error-free;
- its readings, such as watts, temperatures, battery estimates and sizes, are exact. They're estimates based on what macOS reports; or
- Steamie will meet every need you have.
9. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, and subject to section 4:
- we're not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss. This includes lost data, lost work, lost profits, or loss that comes from stopping a process, clearing files or deleting simulators that you confirmed or set a rule for; and
- our total liability to you for anything to do with Steamie is limited to the amount you paid us for Steamie Pro in the 12 months before the claim. If you haven't paid anything, it is limited to AU$20.
Where the Australian Consumer Law lets us limit our liability for goods or services that aren't ordinarily acquired for personal, domestic or household use, our liability is limited, at our option, to replacing or resupplying the goods or services, or paying the cost of doing so.
10. Ending these terms
You can stop using Steamie at any time by quitting and deleting it. If you break these terms, we may end your licence. If we do, you must stop using Steamie Pro, but this doesn't affect any rights you have under section 4.
11. Third-party software
Steamie includes third-party components under their own licences. These include the Sparkle update framework and the DM Sans, DM Mono and Unbounded fonts, which are licensed under the SIL Open Font License. Those licences apply to those components.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make a significant change, we'll tell you in the app or on our website before it takes effect. If you keep using Steamie after the change, you accept the new terms. If you don't agree, you can stop using Steamie. Section 4 still applies to purchases you've already made.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria and the courts that can hear appeals from them. If you live outside Australia, you may also have rights under the consumer laws of your own country, and these terms don't take those rights away.
14. General
If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a right straight away, we haven't given it up. You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our written consent. We may transfer ours as part of a sale or restructure of our business.
